Home Birth Services From a
Prenatal care with a midwife is quite different from the obstetric model of care. With us, our dedicated midwife will provide your care and she will be assisted by an additional midwife, student or birth assistant. . This is your birth team: the people who will attend your birth and care for you and your baby in the weeks postpartum.Your prenatal visits last for an hour. In that time, we do the medical portion of the visit and also go over any choices available at that point in your pregnancy.
It is setting where safe maternity care is provided to low-risk women. We offer the same genetic screening, blood tests, ultrasounds and newborn procedures as you would be offered when seeing a hospital-based care provider, but these are always optional and never required. We believe in Informed Choice, and trust that if we provide our families with the information needed to make decisions, they will choose what is right for them. Once you are thirty-two weeks pregnant, our visits increase to twice a month, and at thirty-six weeks we see you weekly until your baby is born! The remainder of our time together at your visits is spent building on our mutual trust relationship.
Birth Support in your home
Once you go into labor we come to your home. There is no need to worry about what to pack to leave, what you will miss in your home or having your baby in transit. The birth of your child is an experience unlike any other and shouldn’t be rushed or unnecessarily clinical.
We bring will us all the emergency equipment that may be needed. Oxygen, medications to stop bleeding, and any other tools that are commonly helpful. Such as a birthing stool or herbs. Birth pools can be purchased if you are wanting to birth or labor in water. All disposable items will come in your birth kit that will be purchased during your 36 week of pregnancy. Gloves, gauze, peri bottle, etc.
During your birth we can be as hands on or hands off as needed depending on your support needs. During your prenatal visits we talk a lot about what kind of birth you want.
We love for mamas or their partners to catch their babies. Delayed cord clamping is always the normal and we trust your body to birth your baby. During your labor we monitor both mom and baby frequently for their health and well being. After your birth we clean up and make sure mom and baby are taken care of before we leave.
Water births are a wonderful option for many families. Laboring in the warm water can be a soothing form of pain relief and can also be a peaceful transition for the birth as the baby moves from “water to water.” Having the option of water is lovely whether you choose to give birth in the tub or just decide to labor in it.
Waterbirth has been shown to:
In the later stages of labor, the water has been shown to increase the woman’s energy.
The effect of buoyancy lessens a mother’s body weight, allowing free movement and new positioning.
Buoyancy promotes more efficient uterine contractions and improved blood circulation resulting in better oxygenation of the uterine muscles, less pain for the mother, and more oxygen for the baby.
Immersion in water often helps lower high blood pressure caused by anxiety.
The water seems to reduce stress-related hormones, allowing the mother’s body to produce endorphins which serve as pain-inhibitors.
Water causes the perineum to become more elastic and relaxed, reducing the incidence and severity of tearing and the need for an episiotomy and stitches.
As the laboring woman relaxes physically, she is able to relax mentally with greater ability to focus on the birth process.
Since the water provides a greater sense of privacy, it can reduce inhibitions, anxiety, and fears.
Group Prenatal Care Option
Group prenatal care is at the core of Bastrop Birth Center’s program. Prenatal groups offer a rich opportunity to share experiences and resources, to learn from one another, and to create a long-lasting community of support.
This option is also available to clients birthing at home!
Prenatal groups meet monthly in the second trimester and bimonthly in the third trimester. During a group session, each client meets privately with the midwife, followed by an hour and a half facilitated discussion on a variety of topics relevant to the stage of pregnancy. Often, guest speakers will be included to contribute expertise from the community.
We will continue care by coming to your house in the postpartum period, visiting for about an hour or longer for each visit, and spending time with you until all of your questions are answered. We will stay with you for up to 6 hours after your birth and see you after the birth at one day (approximately 24 hours), three days, one week, three weeks, all in the comfort of your own home. We will see you for your six week visit in our office, which includes a full annual exam for you and the baby.

Giving birth at home—like the way it has always been done.
Midwives have always known how to support women through normal, healthy pregnancies and births. They are trained to specialize in normal and have ways to help when things deviate from that. They have experience managing many complications of childbirth and know when to refer moms and babies for competent medical evaluation. Visits offered in a home like setting where safe prenatal care is provided to low-risk women who are wanting to have their babies in their home.
If women are allowed to trust and listen to their bodies, they will naturally seek out dark, safe, quiet places to give birth. A space comfortable and unique to themselves. Unlike a hospital setting that is medical and not very welcoming
Surrounded by the people you love and trust, your body can release the hormones that allow your body to open up and let your baby out easier.
Although Home birth may seem like a new, trendy idea, it’s been happening longer then hospitals and is actually a very old idea.
